Artist Statement
In the mid 1990s, I started spontaneously to create this body of art. It is informed by my deep environmental understanding of the interrelationship of all things. Much of this work is created while I am in Maui, taking time away from my demanding environment work, with time and inspiration from nature to fuel these creative energies.
My artistic creations evolve from a vision of certain lines or shapes, which I see inwardly in vivid combinations of color. These shapes and colours are then transferred using coloured pens on paper, which is my sole medium to date. My inspired work transcends place and time. It is recognized by many viewers around the world as containing sacred geometric patterns. Some artists call my work the language of light. In both my environmental work and my artistic creations, I am dedicated to the raising of consciousness on the planet, with a vision of a return to balance, peace, and health for all living things. My art is activational in this regard. My art pieces are spontaneous creations that arise without a certain intention or subject in mind. The interpretation is in the eye and mind of the viewer. Every person who sees my work has a different idea of it’s meaning. I am careful to keep my descriptions of the work very simple, so as not to influence the overlay of the viewers experience.

Biography

Sheila Cole lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a generous sprinkling of time in Maui, Hawaii. Her degrees are in Liberal Arts and Education. Both degrees are from Acadia University, and include one year of study on scholarship at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Her career path has included classroom teaching, university lecturing, radio broadcasting with CBC, magazine journalism, and international project leadership. Since 1985, her concentration has been on environmental issues. Sheila is best known as an award-winning environmentalist, who works on a broad range of environmental issues, always seen through the lens of the interrelationship between environment and health.
